It is a buyer's market for ammunition with the summer slow season here, and we recently sharpened our pencil on pricing, cutting our profit margins to the bone on most popular items at about net 6% on average once we pay shipping costs, credit card fees and other fixed transaction costs. This sort of single digit profit margin is not sustainable for the business in the long run and we will have to push margins up when the time is right. Also, strong market forces including dramatic increases in the cost of copper and gunpowder, as well as a shortage of gunpowder in general, may lead to increased cost from manufacturers, however for the moment weak consumer demand this past May has been holding prices down. This should be $439 and I plan on returning to that price very soon on this as well as my other 45 Auto options. With copper prices recently at an all time high, peaking at $5.11 on May 21st, and receding only slightly in the past week, it is pretty easy to read the writing on the wall. There is 30-something pounds of copper used to make 1000 rounds of 45 Auto ammo, and with copper skyrocketing from $3.70-ish where it had been for almost 2 years from July 2022 to March 2024, up to $4.70-ish per pound this past April and May, that is roughly a $30 per case increase in raw material price. The ammo factories may take a few months to react to that, but unless the price of copper drops back to where it was quickly it is certain that they will react to it with an increase to offset higher material costs. |
